If you live in Torrance, Redondo Beach, Gardena, or anywhere in the South Bay and you're thinking about getting your car windows tinted — you need to understand California's tint laws first. Getting it wrong can result in a fix-it ticket and having to remove your tint entirely.

California Window Tint Law: The Basics
California law regulates window tinting based on Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the percentage of visible light that passes through the film and the glass combined. A higher VLT% means lighter tint; a lower VLT% means darker tint.
Legal Tint Limits by Window
Windshield
You cannot tint your windshield below the AS-1 line (the top 4–5 inches). The only exception is a strip at the very top, which must be non-reflective. Most shops install a clear or very light windshield film to block UV without affecting VLT.
Front Side Windows (Driver & Passenger)
Front side windows must allow more than 70% of light in. This is the most restrictive rule in California. In practice, this means most visible tints are not legal on your front windows — you can use a clear ceramic film that blocks UV and heat without darkening the glass.
Rear Side Windows & Rear Window
Rear side windows and the rear window can be any darkness — as long as your vehicle has outside rearview mirrors on both sides. This is where most South Bay drivers choose 15–35% VLT for privacy and heat rejection.
Reflectivity Rules
California also limits how reflective your tint can be. Front and rear windows cannot be more than 35% reflective. Highly mirrored or metallic finishes are not legal in California.
Other California-Specific Rules
- Tint must not be red, amber, or blue in color.
- There is no sticker or certificate required in California to certify your tint (unlike some states).
- Medical exemptions exist for people with certain skin conditions — consult your doctor and DMV if applicable.
What Happens If You Get Caught with Illegal Tint?
In California, illegal window tint is typically a fix-it ticket (correctable violation). You'll need to remove the tint, get it inspected, and pay a small administrative fee. However, if you're pulled over repeatedly, it can become a more expensive infraction.
The LAPD, LA Sheriff's Department, and local Torrance PD do occasionally enforce tint laws — especially during traffic stops for other violations.
